Miguel just unveiled the unreleased track, "Come Through And Chill" on his soundcloud and I must admit that I like it way more than most of his "official" tracks. This song is the type of smooth jams that you'll love to play over and over again on vacation (the title is very fitting by the way).
The very organic string instrumental was produced by Amy Winehouse collaborator Salaam Remi. He did a great job as the smooth and easy going atmosphere of the song got me completely sold out. Miguel does the track justice by delivering some heartfelt vocals which will bring you straight to the campfire. The greatness of this song comes from its simplicity !

SchoolBoy Q, one of TDE's most important members is back and he's going hard !!
After "That Part" featuring Kanye West, "Tookie Knows II" is the newest single off of Q's upcoming Blank Face Lp and it's as explosive as gansta rap gets. The song features Traffic and TF, two relatively unknown rappers from Q's Figg St. crew, and it's produced by Nez & Rio.
The production is actually the highlight of the track in my opinion. The slow moody pianos set a dramatic tone which is intriguing. Those cinematic type of beats always work wonderfully with gangsta rap. On the rapping side, SchoolBoy Q and his bros thankfully murder the track. They all rhyme with very agressive flows which compliment the instrumental well. Indeed the fast pace of the rapping and the beat's slowness create an interesting contrast.
I must admit I wasn't too much of a fan of SchoolBoy Q's raw delivery (even though all my rap buddies had been recommending his albums for years) and this new song really made me want to dig deeper into his discography. Now I can't wait for his upcoming album !
Enjoy the music and stay tuned for some new illustrated articles !
I discovered Ivan Ave listening to his producer, the excellent Mndsgn.I already loved his chilled out and colourful universe so it doesn't come as a surprise that I really enjoy his work with rapper Ivan Ave. We can really feel a true rapper/producer alchemy between both artists (which is especially interesting and rare in Hip-Hop). The pair even collaborated on a whole Ep which I really recommend (I put some links below). Prepare yourself for a treat, all the songs on the Ep are killer tracks ! Mndsgn's psychadelic samples and Ivan Ave's smooth voice will certainly make your summer
- Conversations With Myself
- Everybody Digs Bill Evans
- Portraits in Jazz (en tant que Bill Evans Trio)
It's in that context that someone such as Rick Ross could actually sneak in and make a name for himself.Rozay signed a deal with major labem Def Jam, created his own label MMG (which includes Wale and Meek Mill) and took over the music industry with his single "Hustlin' " in mid 2000's. The song was basic but catchy the perfect formula to make a gangsta hit record. His carrer took off. Rick Ross became a star and started rapping with the genre's biggest Heavy Hitters with the likes of Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and even Kanye. It's on the later's album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy that he really showed off his rap skills. Could Rick Ross really rap ? Yes, indeed.Rick Ross wanted to be among the greatest so he stepped his game up. Developping his ear for beats, his wordplays and storytelling skills, Rick Ross is now a compelling act in Hip-Hop. He went from a parody of himself to a true and honest MC. Nowadays, Rozay speaks about his actual life while staying entertaining. Ross just released both very solid mixtape and album Black Dollar and Black Market. He is now signed to Epic Records (home of Travi$ Scott and Future). It's amazing how even after 6 solo projects, a compilation and an album with fellow rapper Jay-Z Kanye is still able to surprise us with new, exciting music. After Yeezus his latest LP, it was hard to see where West was heading artistically. As always, Kanye chose with this new album to scrap his old style and adopt new sonics. Even though there has only been 2 songs on his so called new G.O.O.D Fridays series (he was supposed to drop an unreleased track every friday), I'm completely sold out. Ye' sounds really focused on Real Friends and No More Parties In L.A. which will both appear on his 7th album titled Waves on February 11th (I'm actually glad Facts didn't make the cut). No More Parties In L.A is, as I said an unusual song for Kanye. He teams up with conscious rapper Kendrick Lamar to rap his ass off over a Madlib beat. The chorus is catchy and the Ghostface sample is tasteful. Kenrick Lamar has a fiery delivery and drops some dope lines but surprisingly enough, his verses doesn't match Kanye's (even though Kendrick is at the top of his game; he had the best album of 2015!). Like Ye' said "The writter block is over". Kanye has one of the tightest flow he has ever displayed on No More Parties in L.A. He paints very vivid pictures and his verses are smart and funny (The Genius analysis of the song is worth reading). All I have to say left is that this song got me very hyped for Kanye's upcoming release ! If you liked the article, make sure to share it with your friends !
2015 was a decisive year for british female emcee Little Simz. She released her debut album A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons and a mixtape Age 101: Drop X. Those projects helped her establish herself as a true creative force.
She collaborated with the excellent jazz band BadBadNotGood from Canada to release a one off song: Our Conversations. Even though they both have a different musical universe the chemestry is simply magical.Little Simz's vocals compliments the dreamy riffs played by BadBadNotGood and takes you on another planet. This track is so good that it got me wishing for a collaborative album.
If you really enjoyed the song, you can check out the album BadBadNotGood released with Ghostface Killah or/and listen to Little Simz's debut.
Here are what I consider to be the best Hip-Hop albums of 2015 !
2015 has been a very good year for Hip-Hop, a lot of Heavy Hitters put out great projects this year, that's why it was so tough for me to do a 10 albums list.
Hope you enjoy the music, see you in 2016 !
I've been recently hit by some new music and when that happens I usually don't know where to start my article. Maybe I can by introducing the two artists ? Anderson .Paak is a singer/rapper/producer/drummer who recently blew up from collaborations with some of Hip-Hop's biggest names (Dr Dre, The Game). He released his first album Venice a year ago through OBE records. The effort was very versatile exploring many of Anderson .Paak's amazing skills (he has lots). He can go from the classy soul man to the classic R & B singer to even the agressive trap rapper (see "Drugs"). Meanwhile, producer Knxwledge is more of an underground type of guy. He has signed to Stones Throw records (Home of Madlib, Silk Rhodes,Homeboy Sandman) and has also already a debut album under his belt. He has worked with many great rappers such as the previously mentionned Homeboy Sandman, Rejjie Snow or Blu.
They seemed like an unlikely pairing at first but when I heard the song "Suede" I saw an obvious chemestry between the two. Knxwledge's dusty sampling matched perfectly .Paak's unbelievably funky singing. This song is an UFO to me,it got me feeling like it was recorded 50 years ago, but at the same time there's a very modern vibe to it. If this is a reflection of what has yet to come I can't wait for a Nxworries album ! I really believe in the making of an album with only one producer with rap albums especially at stones throw records (see Freddie Gibbs and MF Doom with Madlib at Stones Thow or other great pairings such as Blu & Exile or Jeremiah Jae with L'orange on different record companies).
Anyways, enjoy the record and be on the lookout for a new article !
